Project Brief
In partnership with Edfri International, Games 4 Good is working to support vulnerable children in Samburu County, northern Kenya, by improving access to education and sustainable livelihoods.
Location: Kenya
Funds Needed: $5,900
The Need
In Samburu County, children face immense challenges in accessing education — and one of the most basic yet critical barriers is the lack of shoes. Many children walk up to 10 kilometers each day to reach the nearest school and return home, often barefoot across rough, rocky terrain under the scorching sun. This not only leads to injuries and infections but also discourages regular attendance.
Due to widespread poverty and the prioritisation of immediate survival needs like food and water, families are unable to afford essentials like school shoes. As a result, even children who are willing and eager to learn are often forced to stay home. Girls face additional challenges, as they are expected to help with household chores or are married off at an early age.
The Solution
Edfri International, driven by compassion and a deep sense of mission, has been working alongside well-wishers for many years to bring hope and tangible support to the people of Samburu. As part of their education support, they have previously provided school shoes in previous years and have seen great success, a simple but impactful step toward keeping them in school. These shoes are more than part of a uniform; they protect children’s feet from snake bites, sharp thorns, and the rough terrain they walk daily. By equipping children with proper footwear, they not only improve their safety but also their confidence and sense of dignity. This effort helps encourage school attendance.
The Opportunity
This project funds 200 pairs of shoes, as well as a maintenance pack to help keep them last, even through the harsh climate conditions. Each pair of shoes represents a story of hope and transformation — one that supports children’s right to education, wellbeing, and a brighter future. Each pair of shoes comes with socks, shoe polish, and a shoe brush, teaching children not only how to care for their footwear but also instilling a sense of responsibility and pride. By learning to maintain their shoes, children are able to keep them in good condition for a long time, and many pairs can even be passed down to younger siblings, further benefiting the entire family. This opportunity offers more than just protection for their feet; it gives children the tools to take ownership of their education and their future. By supporting this effort, you help break down barriers to education, promote dignity, and provide a lasting impact on the lives of these children and their communities.
