Project Brief
In partnership with Feed The Hungry, the Bakery Project aims to improve food security and create livelihood opportunities in Princess, a township in Johannesburg, by expanding a community bakery. Through scaling up of its production of essential, affordable baked goods, the bakery will provide both immediate food support and employment to local residents, addressing critical needs in an area marked by poverty and limited job opportunities.
Location: South Africa
Funds Needed: $3,450
The Need
In Johannesburg’s township of Princess, many residents face daily hardships due to limited infrastructure, high unemployment rates, and scarce access to basic services. Food insecurity is widespread, with many families relying on unstable, informal incomes or social welfare as their only means of support. Princess is home to numerous single-parent and widow-headed households, further intensifying financial strain and the struggle to meet essential needs. Feed The Hungry currently supports around 450 families in the area.
The Solution
To tackle these pressing issues, Feed The Hungry launched the Bakery Project in 2023 with a entrepreneurial mission to support the Princess community. The Bakery Project focuses on providing affordable baked goods to local families while generating employment through sustainable bakery operations. This addresses immediate food needs and creates income opportunities for residents, many of whom have few other job prospects.
The project has already had a meaningful impact, but scaling up its reach requires dedicated kitchen equipment. Investing in specialised baking tools would allow the bakery to increase production, providing more employment opportunities and reaching a greater number of families in need.
With a track record of successful community-based initiatives, such as the installation of an olive press in Zambia that supported local economic growth through olive oil and peanut butter production, Feed The Hungry is well-positioned to replicate this impact in Princess. Expanding the Bakery Project will both serve the immediate needs of vulnerable families and help the long-term economic resilience within the community.
The Opportunity
Supporters can make a lasting difference in Princess by equipping the bakery with professional equipment that will enhance production and expand the project’s reach. The equipment will improve food security and scale up income opportunities, empowering families in Princess to move toward a more secure and resilient future.
