10,000 Meals Packed & Sent to Zimbabwe

10,000 Meals Packed & Sent to Zimbabwe

Project Brief

In partnership with FeedTheHungryUK, Games 4 Good is on a mission to provide meals to children in Zimbawee facing poverty and food insecurity.

Location: Zimbabwe

Funds Needed: $5,500

The Need

Following the end of colonial rule in 1980, Zimbabwe experienced a significant decline into poverty. A long rule by Mugabe of over 30 years brought increasing corruption and instability and has been followed by a period of political turmoil.

After gaining independence, Zimbabwe redistributed large colonial-era farms to its people. However, many new farm owners didn't have the skills or resources needed to farm successfully. Frequent droughts have made the situation worse, leading to severe food shortages that impact a large part of the population. Today, 38.3% of Zimbabweans live below the poverty line, and food insecurity is a major problem.

On top of this, international sanctions have restricted Zimbabwe's ability to grow and access resources, both inside and outside the country. Consequently, widespread poverty has led to issues like malnutrition, poor education, and inadequate healthcare.

The Solution

Over 16,000 children and young people are regularly fed with food provided by Feed The Hungry and their partnership with The Joseph Foundation through local schools. Many of these children are from poorer homes, where there is a constant strain on the family just to provide even the basics, like food.

The Opportunity

Feed The Hungry runs food packing events across the UK, where rice-based meals are packaged by teams of volunteers. These events also create education events for schools, where students not only learn about World Poverty, but also get to take part in a fun activity that directly tackles the problem of food insecurity. The food packed at these events is shipped by Feed The Hungry directly to The Joseph Foundation in Zimbabwe, where the food is cooked and distributed. For $5,500, we can provide the food, shipping, education, distribution, project monitoring and administration costs to provide 10,000 meals to help continue and expand this amazing work.
