Building a Toilet and Washroom in Remote Village

Games 4 Good and Feed The Hungry UK are working alongside local communities to improve health and living conditions for marginalised communities in rural Nepal. Although Nepal abolished the caste system in 1963, many communities that were historically regarded as “untouchable” continue to experience discrimination and unequal access to essential services, including safe water and sanitation.

Since 2020, these communities have been able to drill and install clean water wells, providing reliable access to safe drinking water. Games 4 Good and our partner publishers have been able to be a part of that project; enabling over 2,000 people. Building on the success of these projects, this initiative will construct a new community washroom block containing manually flushed toilets. Located alongside an existing well, the facilities will provide safe, hygienic, and dignified sanitation for villages of between 50 and 200 people, helping to improve health, reduce disease, and strengthen community wellbeing.

The Need

Many marginalised communities in rural Nepal continue to face significant barriers to accessing basic sanitation facilities. Many villages lack safe and hygienic toilets, leaving families vulnerable to waterborne and sanitation-related diseases such as diarrhoea and dysentery.

Feed The Hungry UK has identified this need through its ongoing partnership with their local team and regular engagement with the communities it serves. Local leaders have identified improved sanitation as the next priority following the successful provision of clean water provided through the installation of wells. Without adequate toilet facilities, poor hygiene continues to undermine health, dignity, education, and economic opportunities, particularly for women, children, and other vulnerable members of the community.

The Solution

The project will construct a covered community washroom block adjacent to an existing water well, allowing the available clean water to be used for manually flushed sanitation facilities. Each washroom block will contain two private toilet cubicles connected to a septic tank or soak-away pit for the safe disposal of waste. The facilities will be linked to the existing clean water supply, providing a reliable source of water for flushing and encouraging improved hygiene practices.

Construction will be carried out by experienced local contractors using locally sourced materials, under the supervision of Feed The Hungry’s established team. Once completed, the toilet block will provide community members with safe, private, and hygienic sanitation facilities that will help reduce the spread of disease while promoting dignity, health, and improved quality of life. The local community will be encouraged to take ownership of the facilities, ensuring simple, low-cost maintenance and their long-term sustainability.

The Opportunity

This project represents a lasting investment in the health and wellbeing of some of Nepal’s most disadvantaged communities. Each toilet block will benefit a whole village of people for many years, complementing the clean water infrastructure already established through previous projects.

Improved sanitation will reduce illness, encourage better hygiene practices, and decrease absences from school and work caused by preventable disease. The provision of safe and private toilet facilities will particularly benefit women, children, and other vulnerable members of the community by improving dignity, privacy, and personal safety.

The project will also create short term employment opportunities through the use of local labour and locally sourced building materials, providing additional economic benefits to the surrounding area. Supported by local teams, regular contact with the communities will help ensure the facilities remain well maintained and continue delivering lasting improvements to health, wellbeing, and opportunity for years to come.
