Run a preschool for a year

Disha Kendra, meaning “Direction Centre”, was established in a slum community in Kalyan, near Mumbai, where many low-income and migrant families settle in search of affordable housing and work. This project provides quality early childhood education and daily nutritious meals to 40 young children for 1 year, helping them build a strong foundation for lifelong learning while supporting working families.

The Need

Despite being one of India’s wealthiest cities, Mumbai is home to millions of families living in poverty. In communities such as Kalyan, many residents are migrant workers with low and unpredictable incomes, living in overcrowded conditions with limited access to quality education, childcare, and nutritious food.

While government schools provide free education, access to quality early childhood education is limited, and many families cannot afford private nursery schools where English is the primary language of instruction. As a result, children from low-income communities often begin primary school without the language, social, and learning skills needed to succeed, placing them at an immediate disadvantage compared with their peers.

For working parents, particularly daily wage earners and single mothers, affordable childcare is also scarce, making it difficult to balance employment with their children’s early education. Poor nutrition further affects children’s health, development, and ability to learn.

Without early intervention, these challenges can limit children’s confidence, educational achievement, and future opportunities. There is a clear need for a programme that combines quality early education, English language learning, nutritious meals, and a safe, supportive environment, giving every child the best possible start in life.

The Solution

Disha Kendra operates the Life Kids English Nursery, providing high-quality early childhood education and a daily nutrition programme for children aged 3–5 years from some of Kalyan’s most disadvantaged communities. The programme ensures that financial hardship is never a barrier to learning, enabling every child to access a safe, nurturing environment during these critical early years.

A key focus of the nursery is English-language learning. In India, English is widely used in higher-quality schools, higher education, and many professional careers. Children from low-income communities often have little or no exposure to English before starting school, placing them at a disadvantage from their very first day. By introducing English through phonics, songs, stories, play, and everyday conversation, Disha Kendra helps children develop the confidence and language skills needed to transition successfully into mainstream education and access greater opportunities in the future.

Alongside education, the project provides nutritious daily meals for the children, helping address food insecurity and ensuring they are healthy, focused, and ready to learn. This integrated approach supports children’s physical, emotional, and educational development, giving them the strongest possible foundation for lifelong learning.

The Opportunity

This project ensures that children from the poorest families can access quality early learning, regardless of their financial circumstances. For less than $25 dollars per child per month.

Reliable childcare enables parents, many of whom work long hours in low-paid, informal jobs, to earn a living and provide for their families, knowing their children are safe, cared for, and learning. At the same time, children receive the strong foundation they need to thrive.

A key focus is English-language learning. As English is the language of many higher-quality schools and future employment opportunities in India, early exposure helps children enter mainstream education with greater confidence and a better chance of long-term success.

By combining education, childcare, nutrition, and English-language learning, Disha Kendra gives children the best possible start in life while helping families take an important step towards a more secure future.
